How to Install PS3 Custom Firmware

The instructions below will walk you through on how to install custom firmware v3.55 (the patched version that enables Backup Manager through Syscalls). Then, it will walk you through installing geohot's custom firmware to enable the ability to install 'Package Files'.

1. Download this 'patched custom firmware v3.55' to your computer.

2. Extract and put the 'PS3UPDAT.PUP' file onto your USB flash drive, under the filename “X:/PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP”. Where 'X' represent the drive letter of the USB flash drive. Note the folder path.

3. Connect the USB flash drive to your PS3 console.

4. Watch the video below for firmware installation onto the PS3:

Note: Next, we are going to enable the PS3 the ability to install HOMEBREW APPS (emulators, backup manager, file manager, etc).

5. Visit geohot's website. Download the jailbreak.zip file (look for the line "it's jailbreak time" on geohot.com).

6. Repeat step #2 (above) by transferring geohot's version of PS3UPDAT.PUP onto your USB flash drive (overwriting or delete the previously transferred PS3UPDAT.PUP from step #1).

7. Watch the video (above) again.

8. Install your homebrew apps (See image below: On the PS3 menu, go to GAME, choose 'Install Package Files', and select the homebrew apps that you had transferred onto your USB flash drive).

9. Done!
