Custom Firmware with dual boot option. GameOS or Linux

It appears that developer graf_chokolo from xorloser.com is working on a method that will allow the PS3 to dual boot Linux and GameOS (of a different firmware version) from an external hard drive, but it would require modifying the hypervisor. This is what graf_chokolo had to say, " it would be possible to redirect dev_flash to another HDD region, e.g. by patching Hypervisor’s storage subsystem. HDD has enough space for that".

Official PS3 firmware v3.56 has a rootkit

[UPDATE ABOUT PS3 ROOTKIT HERE]

According to developer Mathieulh, the official PS3 firmware v3.56 is said to contain a rootkit which allow Sony to perform remote code execution upon connection to the PlayStation network. What this means is that Sony can scan for specific files on your PS3 console—such as custom firmwares and hombrew applications—and send a report back to the company. Whether this is legal or not is yet to be determined but be careful what you put on your PS3.

Originally Posted by N.A:

Mathieulh just posted about it on IRC.

Essentially Sony can now remotely execute code on the PS3 as soon as you connect. This can do whatever Sony wants it to do such as verifying system files or searching for homebrew. Sony can change the code and add new detection methods without any firmware updates and as the code executes remotely there is no reliable way to forge the replies.

Whilst it is possible to patch or remove this code from the firmware this will likely mean the end of playing CFW online (as PSN can just check before login that this is active) or at the very least mean it will be even easier for Sony to detect and ban users.

Judging from the fact that people can still connect using the proxy method it seems Sony hasn't activated any of this yet but the functions are there in the new firmware.

Geohot warns Sony about future programmers

Geohot has updated his site with a note that is addressed to Sony.

Note to Sony:
It's apparent you don't care about your reputation with consumers, and I can almost understand your point there.
Few people consider buying a TV or laptop a moral choice, and the consumer base is quite large.
But talented developers are in much shorter supply, and take it from one personally, who you choose to code for is much more of a moral choice. The programmers you will one day be looking to hire are the ones reading the tech news sites right now.
And they will remember.

Official PS3 firmware v3.60 to support cloud save

According to Kotaku, Sony's next firmware update (v3.60) will have an option to store your save game data in the "cloud". In other words, you can store your precious save game data online so that it could be retrieved from another PS3 console simply by logging into your PSN account. The advantage of having this feature is that it will free up hard drive spaces on your PS3. Now, this feature comes with two catches that you need to be aware of: since it "will allow save data with the copy prohibited attribute to be copied into the online storage", developers can choose to opt out--preventing the save game data from being stored online--and you must be a PlayStation Plus subscriber to use this feature. Look for “Online Saving” when this firmware becomes available.

Like it or hate it, it will be coming out this holiday 2011. So, here are several known facts about Sony's next handhelp--Next Generation Portable.

Known Facts:
• British company ARM, which has built NGP's CPU, usually gears its creations towards good battery life, according to TechRadar. Sony's pitching battery life between 4-6 hours.

• NGP contains an ARM Cortex-A9 core (4 core) CPU. This is well ahead of other recent mobile devices, whose manufactures have only recently begun installing Dual Core in the latest handsets. The iPad also uses ARM Cortex designs in its system on a chip (SOC).

• Sony has dubbed the curvaceous chassis of NGP 'Super Oval Design'. The platform holder claims it has been specially created to ensure more comfort in longer play sessions than PSP1.
